Early Stage Project with Huge Ambitions

Some WordPress.com Servers were Compromissed

Very important, but silent news in a blogosphere: some of wordpress.com servers were hacked in a bad way:

Tough note to communicate today: Automattic had a low-level (root) break-in to several of our servers, and potentially anything on those servers could have been revealed.

We have been diligently reviewing logs and records about the break-in to determine the extent of the information exposed, and re-securing avenues used to gain access. We presume our source code was exposed and copied. While much of our code is Open Source, there are sensitive bits of our and our partners’ code. Beyond that, however, it appears information disclosed was limited.

As soon as you read this, change your wordpress passwords (self hosted wordpress.org accounts indirectly influenced also).

The good news: Matt says that practically zero possibility of usernames/passwords leakage. But for security reasons the main recommendations is to change your password.

Which DNS is Better: Public or ISP’s?

Lifehacker today covered pro's and con's of public and ISP's DNS usage. From one point of view: using public DNS sometimes may slow down your browsing experience, because of CDN usage from content provider side and if you use public DNS, content provider will use CDN server nearest to your DNS provider location (e.g. USA if you use Google DNS) not yours IP and you're in trouble if you are in another country. The most significant slowdown you can observe surfing Youtube or other sites with "heavy" content.

On the other hand using your ISP's DNS records sometimes take up to 48 hours if you make some DNS record changes while if using Google's or OpenDNS it takes maximum up to 1 hour, sometimes virtually instant.
